WILD TURKEYS COME TO SALMON!

2015 Salmon turkey release

Salmon — February 24, 2015

NWTF member (and Idaho State Calling Champ), Chris Tambe, releases a hen (above) on Feb. 18 in one of several sites near Salmon. In all, 61 birds were relocated from the Preston area (below) — 15 toms and 48 hens. 19 of the new arrivals were fitted with backpack radio-collars to monitor habitat use, mortality, productivity, and areas to focus habitat enhancement efforts.

This trap and transplant operation is the end result of habitat studies, land owner agreements and coordination between the Idaho Fish & Game and Idaho NWTF, who committed up to $4000 to the project. Other successful Idaho turkey relocations have produced new hunting opportunities for sportsmen and added to the beauty of nature for all to enjoy. We're betting Salmon will become another Idaho NWTF success story!

NWTF HABITAT-HUNT PROGRAM KICKS OFF IN IDAHO
Boise — August 3, 2013

An initial planning session was held at the Idaho Fish & Game offices in Boise to begin developing an Idaho plan for participation in the NWTF's Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. iniitiative.

Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. is a nationwide NWTF effort to restore diminishing wild turkey populations by protecting and enhancing habitat and, at the same, ensure continuation of hunting traditions and rights through hunter recruitment and increased opportunity.

Mikal and Brandon

NWTF's western Director of Conservation Brandon Houck (above right), Regional Biologist Mikal Moore (above left), and Regional Field Supervisor Barnabas Koka presented the program and guided Idaho State Chapter officers and Board members through the criteria development process. The next steps will include refining the plan to create an agenda for putting it all into action. Stay tuned!

IDAHO'S NEW TAKE AIM BB GUN RANGE IN ACTION
Boise — June 22, 2013

The Idaho State Chapter's latest acquisition, the Take Aim BB Gun Range saw its first use at the Gem State Chapter's Fun Shoot at the Pleasant Valley Skeet Club. The inflatable range comes as a self-contained trailer complete with BB and pellet guns, targets, ammo and everything else need for set up and operation of this fun (and portable!) tool to introduce youngster to the sport of shooting. The trailer was also used at the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association Rendezvous field day at Eagle Island State Park in July. It is available to all NWTF chapters in the state for events.

In addition to the BB gun range, the Gem State Chapter's Fun Shoot included professional one-on-one trap and skeet instruction, full round skeet shooting and a great barbecue lunch!

STITES SENIOR WINS CPTT CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP
Kooskia — June 16, 2013

Laine Pratt

"Here is Laine Pratt, the Camas Prairie Turkey Trackers scholarship winner. Nice kid—nice parents and family, as you would expect. Laine's on to the U of I and then back to the prairie to operate the family cattle ranch. I went to his Clearwater Valley High School awards day to present him with this ‘check’ and watch him receive over $15,000 worth of scholarship money and awards toward his education. A young man like Laine affirms a persons hope for the future of our local education system, our state and our nation."

PRESTON PITTMAN A HIT AT IDAHO WILD TURKEY DAY
Boise — March 30, 2013

One of the best-known and most accomplished figures in the history of the NWTF and modern turkey hunting, Preston Pittman travelled all the way from his home in Mississippi to join us for Idaho Wild Turkey Day. Special guest of the Gem State Chapter, Preston's time in Idaho began with an appearance at Sportsman's Warehouse and an evening with Chapter members on Friday.

Idaho Wild Turkey Day began early Saturday with Pittman's informative and humorous seminar followed by the Idaho State Turkey Calling Championships at noon. The Gem State Chapter's 23rd Annual Banquet was that evening where Preston delighted the crowd with his amazing calling ability and antics.

elk by Garden Valley, antelope
toward Fairfield and the majesty
of the Sawtooths in between. It couldn't have been a prettier day and Pittman filled a couple of SD cards with photo memories of his visit to the Gem State.
