WILD TURKEYS COME TO SALMON!Salmon — February 24, 2015

NWTF member (and Idaho State Calling Champ), >, releases a hen (above) on Feb. 18 in one of several sites near Salmon. In all, 61 birds were relocated from the Preston area (below) — 15 toms and 48 hens. 19 of the new arrivals were fitted with backpack radio-collars to monitor habitat use, mortality, productivity, and areas to focus habitat enhancement efforts. This trap and transplant operation is the end result of habitat studies, land owner agreements and coordination between the Idaho Fish & Game and Idaho NWTF, who committed up to $4000 to the project. Other successful Idaho turkey relocations have produced new hunting opportunities for sportsmen and added to the beauty of nature for all to enjoy. We’re betting Salmon will become another Idaho NWTF success story!
DAWNI JENKINS WINS IDAHO STATE NWTF SCHOLARSHIP

Dawni Jenkins of Pocatello has been awarded the Idaho State Chapter $1000 Scholarship for 2015. Dawni also won the Southeast Idaho Chapter award of $500. As daughter of Idaho NWTF Past-President, Don Jenkins, Dawni brought excellent academic and service credentials as well as photo documentation (above, 2010) of her accomplishments afield. Ms. Jenkins will represent Idaho very well in the judging for the NWTF National Scholarship Award.

NWTF HABITAT-HUNT PROGRAM KICKS OFF IN IDAHO Boise — August 3, 2013
An initial planning session was held at the Idaho Fish & Game offices in Boise to begin developing an Idaho plan for participation in the NWTF’s Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. iniitiative.Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. is a nationwide NWTF effort to restore diminishing wild turkey populations by protecting and enhancing habitat and, at the same, ensure continuation of hunting traditions and rights through hunter recruitment and increased opportunity. NWTF’s western Director of Conservation Brandon Houck (above right), Regional Biologist Mikal Moore (above left), and Regional Field Supervisor Barnabas Koka presented the program and guided Idaho State Chapter officers and Board members through the criteria development process. The next steps will include refining the plan to create an agenda for putting it all into action. Stay tuned! For more information, click here.
IDAHO’S NEW TAKE AIM BB GUN RANGE IN ACTION Boise — June 22, 2013The Idaho State Chapter’s latest acquisition, the Take Aim BB Gun Range saw its first use at the Gem State Chapter’s Fun Shoot at the Pleasant Valley Skeet Club. The inflatable range comes as a self-contained trailer complete with BB and pellet guns, targets, ammo and everything else need for set up and operation of this fun (and portable!) tool to introduce youngster to the sport of shooting. The trailer was also used at the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association Rendezvous field day at Eagle Island State Park in July. It is available to all NWTF chapters in the state for events. In addition to the BB gun range, the Gem State Chapter’s Fun Shoot included professional one-on-one trap and skeet instruction, full round skeet shooting and a great barbecue lunch!
STITES SENIOR WINS CPTT CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP Kooskia — June 16, 2013“Here is Laine Pratt, the Camas Prairie Turkey Trackers scholarship winner. Nice kid—nice parents and family, as you would expect. Laine’s on to the U of I and then back to the prairie to operate the family cattle ranch. I went to his Clearwater Valley High School awards day to present him with this ‘check’ and watch him receive over $15,000 worth of scholarship money and awards toward his education. A young man like Laine affirms a persons hope for the future of our local education system, our state and our nation.”

MEMORIAL FOR ED Pocatello — June 6, 2013
When Idaho NWTF President Ed Bullock passed away last year, the State Board voted to honor his service to NWTF with a lasting monument to this champion of habitat conservation. Now finished, the bronze plaque pictured below will be placed on site at one of the many projects created, in large part, by Ed’s hard work and dedication.Board Member Larry Lombard supervised production of the plaque and State Chapter President Don Jenkins is seeing to creating a base and installation near Pocatello.
One of the best-known and most accomplished figures in the history of the NWTF and modern turkey hunting, Preston Pittman travelled all the way from his home in Mississippi to join us for Idaho Wild Turkey Day. Special guest of the Gem State Chapter, Preston’s time in Idaho began with an appearance at Sportsman’s Warehouse and an evening with Chapter members on Friday.Idaho Wild Turkey Day began early Saturday with Pittman’s informative and humorous seminar followed by the Idaho State Turkey Calling Championships at noon. The Gem State Chapter’s 23rd Annual Banquet was that evening where Preston delighted the crowd with his amazing calling ability and antics.
On Sunday after the Banquet, Preston got a little taste of the variety of Idaho landscape and wildlife in a day that included wild turkeys near Eagle, a hillside of elk by Garden Valley, antelope toward Fairfield and the majesty of the Sawtooths in between. It couldn’t have been a prettier day and Pittman filled a couple of SD cards with photo memories of his visit to the Gem State.

STILL ONE OF THE BEST! Emmett — March 23, 2013 The Gem State Chapter’s 13th Annual NWTF-sanctioned Still Target Shoot was held at the Emmett Gun Club under sunny skies. With over two dozen contestants, seven classes and custom prizes for winners, Director Larry Lombard’s event is the largest in the west and one of the best in the nation. This year was no exception as Meridian’s Lee Cotten took top honors in the premier class, Men’s 12 Gauge. Mary Henry takes aim while Debi Lombard watches at the Still Target Shoot

Meridian’s Todd Hanson has been awarded the 2013 Champion of Champions title in the Decorative Duck & Goose Call division at the NWTF National Convention in Nashville. A member of the Eagle Limbhangers Chapter, Todd has been a consistent winner at Nationals for his beautifully hand-crafted calls. Congratulations, Todd! You make Idaho NWTF proud!
